Traveling abroad by plane makes people admire it, but taking a plane is sometimes torture, especially long flights are terrifying. Should you consider sleeping or eating first? Should you try to take off your shoes? Which seat is more comfortable on a long-distance flight? The following are the secrets and tips for hours in the sky.

Should you eat before or during the night?

Kris Major, a British flight attendant with 24 years of experience, told CNN that if you take a night flight and want to have enough sleep on the plane, he recommends that you eat before boarding.

If the flight belongs to a relatively short flight, such as flying from New York to London, this is especially important. You may only have to sleep for up to five to six hours, so you need to make the most of your rest time.

As for when should I eat on the aircraft? When you cross multiple time zones, the flying process may not only serve you one meal. The strategy that should be adopted is that as long as you give food, should you eat? Or should you reduce your meal if you don’t have enough time or don’t want to sleep?

Major suggests that passengers should adopt any measures suitable for their travel arrangements. If you are exhausted, it is best to sleep instead of forcing yourself to eat evening meals at 3 a.m. Furthermore, most airlines do not have a meal service specifically for passengers and time zones to leapfrog.

So, should you prepare your own food and snacks? Because you won't eat anything at least the previous hour after you board. Major says that self-made food is especially important if you suffer from health problems such as diabetes.

What if you can't sleep during a long journey?

Many people find it difficult to fall asleep during long flights, whether it is due to unfamiliar noise, or to cheaper seats, limited leg space and upright seats. Should you persist and continue to try, or give up and watch a movie?

Major said that forced sleep is not intentional, especially if your physiological clock thinks it is noon now and you are not tired at all.

Major reminds that it is important to remember what you need to do at the landing location. If you need to drive or go directly to the meeting, you should take as much rest as possible.

Still drowsy after resting on the aircraft? Major’s suggestion is to brush his teeth, he said that cleaning teeth can make people feel refreshed.

Should you take off your shoes during a long journey?

It would be uncomfortable to sit in the same upright position for several hours during a long journey, but it is not always easy to stand up and stretch.

But Major emphasizes that it is worth it even if you just sit in the seat and twist your toes. He suggested that one move in the seat to help blood circulation, such as twisting the toes slightly in the seat or moving his legs.

Another action that helps blood circulation is to remove shoes. Major encourages all people on long-distance flights to remove their shoes to keep them comfortable and helps blood circulation. He stressed that if you want to take a long-distance flight, this is the right way to do it.

If you are worried that you will feel odorous when you remove your shoes, Major recommends going to the washing room to clean it up. He added that the flight attendant staff didn't mind you taking off shoes, but instead worried that the passengers would reach their feet onto the aisle, which might knock them down.

Which seat is the best booking for a long-distance flight?

If you are worried about trouble, Major recommends trying to sit near the front half of the aircraft. He adds that you may not have any feelings in the front, but the person behind may be shaken and tilted.

If you are tall, Major would suggest booking emergency exit seats for extra leg space may be worth it. Airlines sometimes charge extra fees for seats with leg space.

Major shared that his preference is a window seat because he can sleep on the wall. If he chooses a walkway or a middle seat, there is no such benefit. So he believes that it is definitely worth it to pay extra to change seats near the aisle or window, especially when you need to sleep on the aircraft.
