Elon Musk announced on the 23rd that his artificial intelligence company xAI plans to deploy 50 million Nvidia H100-grade AI GPUs in the next five years. This goal not only exceeds current AI hardware standards in scale, but also significantly improves energy efficiency.
According to the latest report, xAI's Colossus supercomputer cluster has an initial device of about 100,000 H100 GPUs and is planned to expand to 200,000 H100 GPUs, which has not yet reached the scale of 230,000.
Mask said on social media that the goal of xAI is to realize 50 million H100 equivalent AI calculation units online, and emphasize that this goal will be realistic in the next five years. Based on current performance improvement trends, this goal is technically feasible, although this will require a lot of power support.
xAI's Colossus 2 supercomputer plan will use about 1 million NVIDIAGPUs, and the specific number of GB200 wafers has not yet been determined, showing its potential for rapid expansion. The scale of this plan exceeds the deployment targets of OpenAI by the end of 2025, showing the addition of the global AI-based facility competition.
Mask's plan is not only to improve the computing power of xAI, but also to challenge Nvidia's market leader status, and to build xAI into an important participant in the AI computing field through higher efficiency and large-scale computing power. According to estimates, if xAI can achieve 50 ExaFLOPS calculation capacity between 2028 and 2030, the required power supply needs to be further verified, and this demand will challenge current energy-based facilities.
