How to renovate old wooden furniture?

1. Make preparations

1. First lay newspapers on the floor, then open the doors and windows to ensure sufficient ventilation. Place the wooden furniture to be painted on the newspaper. Before you start, wear a mask and gloves.

2. Use a screwdriver to remove the hardware on the furniture. If you are painting a chest of drawers or dressing tables, remove the hardware on it before you start. This has two benefits: one is to ensure that the paint is not brushed on the hardware; the other is to replace the hardware or paint it in full.

3. Use glue agent (putdy) to repair gaps with notches, holes and dents. Use a putty knife to scrape off the excess glue and let the glue dry.

4. Use sandpaper to polish the surface of the furniture. This is done to remove protective varnish or paint from the surface of wooden furniture, making the primer more easily attached to the furniture. If there are any uneven areas, sandpaper should be used to make the glue-slit to keep the glue-slit flush with other parts of the furniture.

5. After sanding the surface of the furniture, gently wipe it with a clean coarse cloth to remove the residue and make the surface of the furniture clean and tidy. If necessary, use a mild detergent and then wipe the surface of the furniture with a cloth.

2. Start applying primer and painting

1. If you want the furniture to look even in color, apply a primer. Use a paint brush and roller to gently prime the wooden furniture surface. Paint brushes are used to brush edges, corners, and areas that are difficult to brush; use a roller to roll a large and uniform area without a wavy appearance. Wait until the primer is dry before applying.

2. After the primer is dried, polish the surface with fine-grained sandpaper. Sand paper can make the paint stick to the primer better.

3. Start painting, use a roller first, and then paint brush. If possible, roll the even part with a foam roller and then evenly repaint with a paint brush. Pay special attention to places where the roller cannot be brushed, such as edges and corners. Wait until the paint has dried up and check if there are any areas that have not been completely painted.

4. If necessary, apply another layer of paint. According to professional paint craftsmen, the first layer of primer and paint are not enough to produce professional results. Wait for the first layer of paint to dry (it is best to dry all night, at least 6 hours), and then use the above method to brush the same paint again.

5. Brush protective paint (optional). After the paint is dry, apply it with varnish or sealant to avoid scratches and scratches on the paint. This can also add a slight luster to the furniture.

6. Wait until the paint is dry and the paint brushing work is over!

Tip:

1. You can use acrylic spray paint, so that you don’t need to paint protective paint after spraying, because acrylic itself can provide sufficient protection.

2. Add some paint to the primer so that the primer will be thicker, thereby reducing the possibility of wood grain seeping out.
